Alternate Names: Ammut, Am-mut, Amit
Ammit is a Neter of the Underworld. She is depicted not as a human, but instead as a collection of Kemet's most feared animals. Her head was mostly crocodile, Her front and chest was that of a lion or leopard, while Her hind-quarters and abdomen were that of a hippopotamus.
She is known as the "Devourer of the Dead", and similarly as "Great of Death". These titles do indeed accurately describe Her role in the Weighing of the Heart. Ammit is stationed just to the side of the scales in the hall of Double Truth, before Wesir.
During the "Weighing of the Heart", the heart of the deceased was weighed against the feather of Ma'at. Should the scales stay balanced, the ba (soul) is judged to have been good, honorable, and just and is taken to the Duat (Beautifull West). Should the scales not stay balanced (meaning the heart was heavier than the feather of Ma'at), the heart of that ba would be fed to Ammit. This is nothing short of complete and utter annihilation of that ba. For the people of Kemet, this could be considered the final judgment.
