About
Alternate Names: Anukis, Anqet, Anuket, Ankhet
Anket is the Neter of the cataracts of the Lower Nile. She is depicted wearing a modius from which stems ostrich feathers. Often She is depicted accompanied by a gazelle, an animal sacred to Her.
Her worship stems back to the Old Kingdom, and temples dedicated to Her could be found in Elephantine, and Seheil. One of the meanings of Her name is “embracer” which has a dual meaning, either benign as a nurse, or lethally as a strangler. It is this duality of Her name, that She became closely tied to Het-Hert in Thebes.
Anket is called the daughter of Re, and it was not until the New Kingdom that she became known as the divine child of Khnum and Satis.
