The four sons of Heru ( Imset(y), Hapi, Duamutef and Qebshenef ) were responsible for protecting the embalmed vital organs of the deceased.
During the process of mummification, the vital internal organs were removed and placed into canopic jars. While the lids to these canopic jars initially started out in the form of the deceased's own head, during Dynasty IV, the lids were redesigned in the image of the heads of the son's of Heru.
While the sons of Heru protect the vital internal organs, they are not without protection themselves. Aset protects Imset(y), Nebt-Het protects Hapi, Nit protects Duamutef and Serqet protects Qebshenef .
